BiographyGeorge Washington was born on February 22, 1732, on his father’s plantation in Westmoreland County in Virginia (“Biography of George”).
George’s father died when George was just 11 years old - from then on, he was raised by his mother (“Biography.com Editors”). After George’s father passed away, “it’s likely he helped his mother manage the plantation” where the family grew tobacco" (“George Washington”). George met Martha Custis, who was one year older, and married her in January of 1759 - they never had children, but George became a devoted and caring father to Martha’s two children from her previous marriage (Carter, 94). After Mr. Washington's older brother died, George became responsible for all of the family's plantations and land holdings, and managed the plantation for the remainder of his life (“Biography of George”). |
